SYDNEY, Australia – 10 November 2022: In time for World Diabetes Day, model Bambi Northwood -Blyth joins Dexcom Inc. (Nasdaq: DXCM), a global leader in real-time continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes, and its Australian subsidiary Australasian Medical and Scientific Ltd (AMSL) Diabetes to announce the arrival of the global Dexcom Warrior program in Australia in early 2023.
Dexcom Warriors is a global advocacy movement that aims to raise local awareness and understanding about living with diabetes. With support from locally based diabetes advocates, the program works to improve the availability of diabetes support, education and life-changing continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology for everyone with diabetes.
Currently, about 1.8 million Australians have diabetes and around 130,000 are living with Type 1 diabetes. Since July, the Australian government has opened the opportunity for more people with Type 1 diabetes to access potentially life changing CGM technology through a subsidy under the National Diabetes Services Scheme. CGM is a wearable technology that helps to improve the quality of life of people with Type 1 diabetes by measuring glucose levels in real time, and providing alerts when levels are outside optimal range. This means that CGM can replace the need for fingerprick tests* multiple times a day because the technology does this automatically through continuous monitoring, giving much greater peace of mind.
Gillian Hebden from AMSL Diabetes said, “The Dexcom Warrior program has amassed a large global following of people who are passionate about living – and thriving – with diabetes. It provides exciting opportunities for local Dexcom CGM users to join this powerful global community and participate in the #WARRIORUP conversation, encouraging people to share their stories to empower, inform and inspire each other in their diabetes journey.
Dexcom Warriors can be involved in all types of exciting activities to help each other as they navigate life with diabetes.”
Bambi Northwood-Blyth, Melbourne model, activist and entrepreneur said, “Being part of the Dexcom Warriors community has been enriching not only in expressing my unique Type 1 experience in varied ways but also through adding value to others and the shared experience of living through this journey. As part of World Diabetes Day this year, I was honoured to design a patch with Dr. Mike Natter, an artist and fellow Type 1 person, to bring creativity and our story to life onto this device we constantly wear.
“Type 1 diabetes is often referred to as an invisible condition, and this World Diabetes Day I really wanted to embrace the opportunity to show the world the ‘behind the scenes’ work it takes to live a normal life.
“Whether it’s a sensor change, food calculations, medication or a time zone change – with my job taking me around the world I like to incorporate feelings of Type 1 with normalising and empowering our community. I am excited for the world to see diabetes through our Type 1 community’s eyes.”
The Dexcom Warriors global community involves more than 20,000 members including celebrities, influencers and people in their own local communities who are all doing great work to raise awareness about the reality of living with diabetes.
The Dexcom Warrior program is open to all Dexcom CGM users, and Aussies are invited to register their interest now here.
