School Guide To Raise Diabetes Awareness in Schools

SYDNEY, Australia – 30 January 2023: Dexcom Inc. (Nasdaq: DXCM), a global leader in real-time continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes, and its Australian subsidiary Australasian Medical and Scientific Ltd (AMSL Diabetes) have released a School Guide to give schools the information they need to better support students with type 1 diabetes.

The Guide aims to help schools better understand diabetes management and support students who use Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology. CGM is a wearable technology that can help to improve the quality of life of people with Type 1 diabetes by measuring glucose levels in real time, and providing alerts when levels are outside optimal range. This means that CGM wearers no longer need to conduct the fingerprick* test multiple times a day because the technology automatically monitors glucose levels continuously, giving much greater peace of mind.

Currently, about 1.8 million Australians have diabetes and around 130,000 are living with Type 1 diabetes.[1] The Guide is timely considering more Australians with Type 1 diabetes are accessing CGM technology through a subsidy under the National Diabetes Services Scheme.

Gillian Hebden from AMSL Diabetes said, “The School Guide provides important information for teachers and school administrators about the difference between CGM technology and blood glucose meters, as well as how CGM devices work and what the alerts mean on these devices.”

“The Guide aims to help schools better understand and respond to CGM device alerts and support their students in accordance with their individual diabetes management plan.

Having a better understanding of diabetes, diabetes technologies and treatment methods in schools is important to best support students living with diabetes.”

Christie and Christian Gonzalez, co-founders of the Willow Rose Foundation for Diabetes said the start of the 2023 school year for their daughter Willow Rose, involves extensive daily planning beyond the need for uniforms, shoes, books and everyday lunches and snacks.

“As we get set for the 2023 year, we need to consider factors such as what daily snack foods and drinks are needed in addition to normal school lunches, if any sensor changes are required, and what events at school are likely to impact Willow’s glucose levels on any given day. In addition, we need to consider Willow’s moods, previous day’s activities that can still impact her glucose levels and most worrying is ‘will the teaching staff at school know how to read Willow’s Dexcom G6 system and know how to appropriately respond.’”
