Jeremy Morris – Employee Spotlight

Hi, I’m Jeremy and I am part of the Customer Care Team at AMSL Diabetes.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in June 2002, when I was just 9 years old. Being a massive sports enthusiast, even as a child, I always questioned whether my T1D would interfere with my love for sport and living an active lifestyle. As I was growing up, I managed my T1D with multiple daily injections (MDI) with self monitoring blood glucose testing but I often thought there must be a better way. In 2016, I started using the Animas Vibe Insulin Pump and Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System and honestly, I have not looked back since.

Tell us about a time when you were able to balance your love for sport with T1D

Snowboarding is one of my favourite past times. Not only was managing T1D with MDI and fingerpricks time consuming, it often became more difficult during strenuous activity and the constant change in temperature. It was not until I started using the Animas Vibe Insulin Pump and Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System that I found it a lot easier. Monitoring my glucose levels became as easy as getting my phone out to check the time!

Being able to go between temp basal and not being restricted to inject at a certain time, really helped with a more flexible experience on the snow.

Dexcom G5 Mobile enabled me to see where my glucose levels are, where they have been and where they are going and this significantly increased my confidence, knowing that I am not plummeting while riding and that I am also not running high*.

With the use of the Follow app, others riding with me were able to receive notifications to see if I am low or high, giving them a greater peace of mind.

How does pumping and CGM help you with your active lifestyle and sporting activities?

Whether it’s 1800 metres above sea level on a mountain or surfing the beautiful island of Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia, both the Animas Vibe Insulin Pump and Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System are vital in my day to day control and monitoring#. It gives me the confidence to wake up every day not knowing what the day has in store and to not feel restricted by needles and fingerpricks*.

What can you do now that you couldn’t do before using the Animas Vibe Insulin Pump and Dexcom G5 Mobile System?

After using Dexcom G5 Mobile, I have fallen in love with the trace feature and the trend arrow. Being able to see where I’ve been and where I’m going allows me to make more educated decisions and gives me a much better insight into exactly what my levels are doing*.

The Animas Vibe Insulin Pump helps me to eat what I want and also gives me the ability to adjust insulin doses with a significant amount of ease as many times as I need to throughout the day.

Do you have any tips for others looking into pumping or CGM?

When deciding between traditional MDI with fingerpick testing and insulin pump therapy with Dexcom CGM^, keep in mind the freedom that insulin pump therapy and CGM may bring. Sometimes it is hard to break routine when it is structured and dependable but sometimes change may lead to many other exciting opportunities.

What have you learnt from this whole experience?

How quickly your blood glucose level can rise and fall and how easy it is to let high and low levels go undetected when you are concentrating on something that you’re passionate about such as a hobby. I also realised how much better it is to not inject six times a day.

Looking into the future

I know whatever I decide to do in the future, it won’t be hindered by the fact that I have Type 1 Diabetes!
