Emma Cooper – Employee Spotlight

Hello! My name is Emma and I am the Customer Care Manager at AMSL Diabetes.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) when I was 13 years old and I do not remember my life without it. Although there have been some ups and downs, having T1D has given a lot back to me. Because of my T1D, I gained an interest in nutrition and health science, I have met some of my dearest friends, I am constantly amazed at the Diabetes community and support that is available, and I have found my dream job where I get to talk and help other people living with T1D every single day. I am currently using the Animas Vibe Insulin Pump and Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System to help manage my T1D especially with my busy lifestyle as a new mum!

How did you manage your T1D during your pregnancy and after giving birth?

Anyone with T1D will know that it is impossible to maintain perfect control for 9 months. I used the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM CGM throughout my pregnancy to monitor my glucose levels. Apart from the odd scare when I noticed high or low levels, Dexcom CGM helped me look at the bigger picture and reassured me that I was on track most of the time. I also had to make sure that I was realistic with my expectations and not to get too concerned when I experienced any levels outside of the normal range. Towards the end of my pregnancy, the basal rates in my Animas Vibe Insulin pump needed to be adjusted every couple of weeks and by using the pump, I was also able to pre-program a different basal program to use as soon as my son was born. Being able to prepare this in advance, calmed my nerves before the big day!

Like any new mum, I was juggling the crazy emotions, pure exhaustion and raging hormones whilst also trying to manage my blood glucose levels (BGL) . I was fairly well prepared with hypo stashes all over my house – ready to catch those rapid hypos that I had been warned about. I was lucky enough to be using Dexcom CGM to alert me to when my levels were dropping before I went hypo which kept me on the front foot (most of the time!). My family was initially worried about me being at home all day with a new baby and BGL that were unpredictable. After commencing on the Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System, I was able to invite a few family members as “followers” so they could help manage my T1D, letting me focus on spending time with my new little boy. Being able to hand over some of that responsibility to others made the transition to parenthood a lot easier.

How does the Animas Vibe Insulin Pump and Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System help you manage T1D now with your family lifestyle?

As a busy mum of a toddler, I am not able to stick to a routine with my meals or exercise. I use my Animas Vibe Insulin Pump to calculate my insulin doses whenever I can squeeze in a meal, and I use my Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM System to alert me about my glucose levels. Dexcom CGM is especially useful when I have forgotten to bolus or if I have been running around all day and my levels are dropping quickly.

We are a very active family and we need the right products that suit our lifestyle. As we now have a toddler, we need a pump that can handle some bumps as we run/jump/roll around all day. Dexcom G5 Mobile was launched when my son was about 5 months old, and this was the perfect product to help me return to activities that I hadn’t participated in for some time. I started jogging with the pram a few times a week. To do this, I would position my phone so that I could easily see my BGL readings whilst running. Having this information on hand gave me the confidence to run longer distances than I had before I fell pregnant.

Do you have any tips for others looking into pumping or CGM?

Find the right product that suits YOUR lifestyle^. Think about what you want to get out of the product and the features that are important to you^. Diabetes does not follow any rule book, expect to get highs and lows that you will never be able to explain, and that is okay. You just need to do the best you can do, with the tools that you have. I am lucky enough to be able to access the Dexcom CGM and Animas Vibe Insulin Pump which makes my life with T1D a lot more manageable.

Why did you choose AMSL Diabetes?

Of course, I am biased but I truly believe we have the best customer service team. I can hear the conversations our team has with customers and they genuinely care about each and every person who has, or is affected by T1D. Many of us have some kind of personal connection to T1D and can relate to a broad range of issues or enquiries that our customers have.

Looking into the future?

We are hoping to grow our family over the next few years but in the meantime, I am just enjoying life with the three of us. Diabetes is not a focus for us as we know the technology we use is giving us a peace of mind.
